New River area and Deem Hills, located in the Sonoran Desert north and northwest of Phoenix, offer great scenery for hikes. In the summer things are not as hot as they are in the more granite based areas of the McDowell Mountains, South Mountain, and Camelback.
Since you get more rain around the Spurcross and New River areas, things are a bit plusher than down on South Mountain.
